DeskTime system and network requirements

Please make sure you meet the minimum requirements to run DeskTime on your system. Generally, DeskTime supports Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. There is no built-in support for virtual machines.

Specification

Windows specification:

• Server OS is supported.
• Windows users are required to install Microsoft NET framework 4.8 in order to run DeskTime.

Linux specification:

• GNOME 3 desktop environment, X11 windowing system, x64. AppImage, deb.
• For all Linux DeskTime app versions, you will need Browser extensions to track website URLs. See all currently available extension links below in the ''My browser is not tracking URLs'' section.
• In case your Linux computer is missing a package or the DeskTime app doesn't work, although you have logged in through the DeskTime app, type in the desktop terminal sudo apt-get install -f and all the necessary packages will be installed automatically. 

Supported browsers

DeskTime supports the following web browsers:

• Google Chrome
• Mozilla Firefox
• Microsoft Edge
• Opera
• Safari

Please note that even if a browser is supported, there can be limitations! See the information below.

Browser extensions

Opera browsers and any browsers that have a language other than English as their default language will need a browser extension. Opera runs on the Chromium engine, so the Google Chrome link works for your Opera needs.

The extension will allow you to have a URL breakdown for the browsers in question. 

• You will be able to see a particular URL as an application. If you do not have this extension,  your app breakdown might show only Opera, for example, as the only app you were using. 

For MacOS and Windows users:

• A browser extension is required for the Opera browser. 
• A browser extension is needed if an internet browser is in a language other than English.

In most cases, you will have to update your web browser. More info here.

For those who use an older DeskTime version for Windows or Linux operating systems, it is required to install the browser extension.

The extension will allow you to have a URL breakdown. You will be able to see a particular URL as an application instead of Chrome, for example. Please follow the links below to install the Extensions:

• Google Chrome (extension required);
• Mozilla Firefox (extension required).

If you run the latest DeskTime version on Google Chrome, Safari, or Ms Edge, the extension is unnecessary.

What MacOS permissions do I need to use DeskTime?

To provide accurate productivity insights, macOS requires specific permissions within System Settings > Privacy & Security. Without these enabled, DeskTime cannot distinguish between different tasks or accurately track your active time. Please learn more here.
